Concrete Roof Tile - Materials, Cost, Colors

Back To The Cave With Concrete Roof Tile

Man first moved indoors to get protection from the elements. Caves were found that gave rock protection over his head and thus gave protection from the rain, snow and wind. Over the years man learned to construct his own caves using a variety of materials but all were designed to keep him dry and warm. Today with the advent of concrete roof tiles we have come full circle and are once again turning to rock to provide the protection we seek from the elements. Unlike your standard shingles, concrete is going to bring with it a substantial weight increase in your roofing.

One of the advantages to a concrete roof comes from its manufacturing process.  Pigment is mixed with the sand and concrete so produce a strong hard molded tile. No matter what you desire for a roof color, the pigment can be found to produce that color. To insure color uniformity in your roof it is best to order the tile made in one batch as colors can vary from batch to batch in production.

While the installation process for concrete roof tile is similar to that of asphalt tile, it should not be undertaken by the inexperienced roofer. As mentioned above, it is heavier and has therefore has to be secured firmly to the under roof. Once installed, properly, it will provide a water tight seal to prevent the infiltration of water, snow or ice into your home. Each tile is designed to interlock and provide its own seal against the elements. Because of its design it can be used to cover almost any slope from the pitch of your roof to the walls of your home.
